Dementia Myth – Most Patients with Dementia are Curable.

by Vernon Coleman MB ChB DSc FRSA

I recently read this book by Vernon Coleman about Dementia and the myths surrounding it. Vernon describes the many different types of illness which can cause Dementia and Dementia like symptoms and for some of these illnesses he outlines treatments which may lead to a partial or full recovery where the symptoms disappear.

He moves through the different causes of Dementia, for example B12 deficiency, and lays out courses of treatment.

it is an established fact that individuals who are deficient in vitamin B12 are likely to suffer from a wide range of symptoms with dementia being one of the most significant of those symptoms. So, around the world, how many of the many millions said to be suffering from Alzheimer’s disease are in reality simply vitamin B12 deficient and could be cured with a short course of injections?

Coleman, Vernon. Dementia Myth: Most Patients With Dementia Are Curable (p. 37). EMJ Books. Kindle Edition.

(seperately I have been looking at Scientific Papers which suggest that even with a B12 absorption issue enough of the vitamin would be absorbed from a high daily dose of B12 to compensate. Testing for a B12 deficiency is the first step. As always best discussed with your GP)

I enjoyed reading the factual content of the book about Dementia , its causes and potential solutions, I used the book for this information and did not allow myself to get caught up in his strong viewpoint around drug companies and patients who are rushed onto drug based treatments without first establishing the real cause of Dementia.

I think its worth a read, so that you have a template which enables you to work with your GP on a step by step basis to test for and eliminate all possible causes of Dementia for yourself or someone you care for.
