What We Don’t Know Yet

The dose question isn’t settled. Multiple studies use standardised extracts (typically 3% rosavin + 1% salidroside) at doses ranging from around 170mg to 680mg daily, but there’s no clear consensus on optimal dosing for mental fatigue specifically. The finding that lower doses may work as well as higher ones [8] is intriguing but hasn’t been definitively established [2].
Acute vs. chronic effects don’t behave as expected. The endurance study found that a single dose worked better than four weeks of daily supplementation [14]. We don’t fully understand why. Does the body adapt to Rhodiola quickly? Does it work differently in different contexts? The 2023 systematic review found that acute and chronic supplementation had *different* effects on *different* types of performance [3]. This is genuinely unexplained.
Most of the early foundational research is Eastern European.
