Friend of the Sea Sustainable Omega-3

For an Omega-3 supplement or oil to achieve Friend of the Sea sustainability certification, the product must undergo a thorough audit. This audit verifies adherence to the following production standards:

The source material must either be trimmings or by-products from existing seafood processing, or it must originate from fisheries or fleets already approved by Friend of the Sea.

If the source is whole fish, krill, or seaweeds, the associated fishery must, among other criteria:

    • Target a fish stock that is not overexploited.

    • Employ selective fishing methods to ensure discards do not exceed 8%.

    • Avoid the bycatch of endangered species.

    • Operate under a management plan guided by the Precautionary Principle.

    • Ensure its management practices consider the impact on the broader ecosystem.

    • Implement effective waste management strategies.

    • Demonstrate energy efficiency.

    • Adhere to Social Accountability principles.

Furthermore, the processing of the fish and the Omega-3 oil itself must conform to established Environment Management System practices and uphold Social Accountability principles.
